How to cope with stereotypes and aggressions towards your country.

Spørsmål

Is it normal for Americans to experience stereotypes and microaggressions on a daily basis here and especially in studies? I understand the politics and our president is awful, but every day I feel more worthless and less confident here; and I've never felt this before in an any life or academic setting. My professors, classmates, and even people at the gym make comments regarding the politics of the United States, and it feels like they completely miss who I am as an individual person.

Hei

Thank you for this very timely question, and for addressing this interesting but also toxic display of attitude that you experience.

In my experience we are in general able to detect that we should see the individual apart from his or her country, culture or politics. We want to do the right thing and behave in a good way, but we don't always practice as we preach.

Your description of the comments you get and how it makes you feel shows its own story, and i think that many can relate to this for different reasons.

As you allude to, the impact of the U.S. politics and Trump is overwhelming for a lot of people. For those who are engaged in politics of the world and how we are impacted, it's not difficult to point at your president and make an argument of blame and consequences.

You are, of course, not to blame for any of this.
Yet you feel the impact of the aggression, and that is important to address.

As I understand your question, for you the problem is that the microaggression is directed towards the president, but you feel the blows because you are in the room. You are in a way collateral damage.

So, what can you do about it?

Perhaps nothing. Maybe a lot.
That is, you can't do much about the comments and expressions people around you have. That is not up to you. But you can do a lot about how you react to things being said and manage how they affect you.

You describe how you feel more worthless and less confident by all the comments and attitudes. That is of course not good, and really bad for you when it goes on for a long time.

Here is one possible way to adress this situation.
You start by finding out why it affects you so much. For you to “feel worthless and less confident” by the comments, the comments must affect you or someone you care about (e.g. your country).

So you are under attack, and you feel you have to defend against the attack. The dilemma that makes it difficult and confusing, from what you write, is this: You are under attack for something you are not responsible for, and you acknowledge the attack as valid at the same time.

So here´s an experiment of thought: In these situations; ask yourself:

  • Are the comments directed at you? (y/n)
  • Are you, or someone you care about under attack? (y/n)
  • Are the comments valid as an expression of opinion? (y/n)
  • Should you respond to or defend against the comments? (y/n)

The reasoning of this is to simplify, sort out what is what, and if possible, make a change for how it affects you. If you can't control or affect your surroundings, try to control your way of dealing with it. Don't defend yourself if you are not attacked. If you're not under attack, you can be free to take your own stand and express your opinions if you wish to.

Your question shows that you feel constantly under attack, and that must be exhausting.
I hope that my suggestion of a way to handle it can be of help, but one quick fix doesn't necessarily do the trick.

Since you are a student, there is a free offer of student counselling at your location. Talking to someone can help you find your way through this.

I am curious if and how the recent events in US elections and politics will play out; will it affect the stereotypic attitude and microaggression that you experience?

That is for you to find out, and I wish you the best of luck onwards!
