Spørsmål
Hi! I had unprotected sex last night with my partner and I'm not on any contraception. I have decided to take a regular contraception as we don't want to use condoms anymore. I have 3 questions.
1. Should I take morning after pill to make there's no pregnancy (He didn't finish inside me but I want to be 100% safe)? I want to check pregnancy test but I think it's still too soon to know the accurate result.
2. If I should take morning after pill, for how long do I have to wait to start taking the regular contraceptive pills?
3. After taking regular contraceptive pills, for how long should I wait for them to start working before having any intercourse?
I understand you want to be completely safe. I’ll answer question by question, simply and clearly:
1. Should I take a morning-after pill?
Yes. Even if he didn’t finish inside you, pregnancy is still possible.
Emergency contraception lowers the risk as much as possible.
Take it as soon as you can after sex.
There are two types:
One works up to 3 days.
One works up to 5 days.
Pregnancy test:
It’s too early now.
Test 3 weeks after sex, or if your period is late.
2. When can I start regular birth control pills?
It depends on which morning-after pill you take.
If you take levonorgestrel (3-day pill):
You can start regular birth control right away.
If you take ulipristal (5-day pill):
Wait 5 days before starting regular birth control.
In both cases, use extra protection at the start (7 days).
3. How long until regular birth control works?
Combined birth control pills:
They are effective after 7 days.
Progestin-only pills (mini-pill):
They work after 2–7 days, depending on the type.
To be completely safe:
Wait 7 days before having unprotected sex.
You’re doing the right thing by taking care of your sexual health. If anything is unclear, or you want help choosing contraception, you’re welcome to ask.
