Continuing HRT in Norway for gender incongruence.

Spørsmål

Continuing HRT in Norway Hello, I was wondering if SiO has any special healthcare for trans students? From my own experience and from what I've read, it can be very difficult to get HRT for gender incongruence in Norway. My understanding is that I would either need to get lucky and find a GP who would be willing to fill my US prescription, or I would need to be referred to Rikshospitalitet and start a potentially years long process to get a Norwegian prescription. I've been on estrogen HRT for 5 years and have a valid US prescription but I worry that I might have difficulty getting hormones in Norway. I'm over 30, so I unfortunately cannot go to the Helsestasjon for kjønn og seksualitet in Oslo. Any help you'd be able to provide would be appreciated!

Hei

Velkommen!

I will do my best to address your question. As I understand it, you are planning to move to Norway permanently. In that case, you will eventually be able to select a general practitioner (GP/fastlege) here. I believe the GP would be the most appropriate place to start.

I recommend bringing documentation of your treatment abroad. The GP will then be able to assess whether they can continue your treatment and create a follow-up plan, or if there is a need to involve other healthcare services. In such cases, a regional center for gender incongruence (secondary healthcare services) would be the right place for a referral. These centers provide evaluation, treatment, and follow-up. From my experience, the individuals I have referred to these centers have been very satisfied with the care they have received.

Rikshospitalet functions as the national treatment service (tertiary healthcare services). However, not everyone needs to be referred here. It is particularly relevant for individuals considering surgical treatment.

I hope this clarifies things, and I wish you the best of luck!
