I lose control over mye eating; is this a disorder?

Spørsmål

Hi, I have talked to my fastlege about my complete loss of control around food and intense episode of overeating. The only answer I got was that I needed to plan better, not have sweet food around and make an effort. I'm not forcing myself to fast or vomit after an episode but I feel really bad about myself. That doesn't stop me from repeating the same behavior again and again and I'm not sure where to find help. I contacted ROS but they have a waiting list. Is overeating like this with intense episodes a disorder? I tried to make efforts, I joined groups, I know what to eat to be healthy. I exercise regularly. I need help but I'm a bit lost.

Hei

Thank you for your important question. I think ROS is a good place to talk about struggles with food. Hopefully, you will get som help there, even though they have a waiting list.

If ROS is not an option, you might want to check out your studentsamskipnad, and see if they have someone you could talk to about this.

There is a disorder that is called "Binge Eating Disorder", and it is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Episodes of binge eating, occuring at least once a week over a period of several months
  • Loss of control during the eating episode
  • The episode is accompanied by negative emotions like guilt, distress or disgust
  • There is no selfinduced vomiting or excessive exercise after binge eating (as would be the case in Bulimia)
  • The binge eating causes distress, and can impair functioning in the individuals personal life, work, family or social life.

There's a website www.thehumanaspect.com/ with interviews with people from around the world who have struggled with different kinds of mental challenges, (including eating disorders), and how they solved these challenges. Hopefully, this website can give you some comfort; you are not alone.
