Struggle to understand my periods of low energy and motivation?

Spørsmål

Hello, I came to Norway for exchange student experience. This is not my first time living abroad. For the past year, I’ve been experiencing frequent periods of low energy and lack of motivation. I oversleep(10-16 hours a day), and can't focus on something. I still manage to complete essential tasks like work and submitting assignments, but I often avoid things that I can skip, like attending classes. These low-energy phases seem to last most of the time—about 20 days out of a month. When I feel like this, I tend to withdraw, avoid responsibilities, and struggle to find motivation. I recognise this pattern(?), and while I want to break out of it quickly, I find it difficult. I’m looking for ways to better understand why this is happening and how I can manage it more effectively. This extreme lethargy started last semester. Before this time the biggest event of my mental is panic attack while working

Hello

Sounds like this has been a challenging time for you! First, I want to emphasize that what you're experiencing—low energy, lack of motivation, oversleeping, and difficulty focusing—can happen to many people, especially when navigating life changes like moving to a new country and facing academic pressures.

You're showing a lot of self-awareness by recognizing this pattern and wanting to understand it better. That’s a great step!

You’re not alone in this, and there are people who can support you. You can contact the health services at your Studentsamskipnad here.

In the meantime, a few things you can try:

  • Gentle Routine Adjustments: Small habits like getting outside for a short walk, keeping a consistent wake-up time, or engaging in activities you once enjoyed (even in small amounts) can gradually help reset your motivation.
  • Social Connection: Even if it feels difficult, maintaining contact with friends or engaging in low-pressure social activities can provide emotional support.
  • Light Exposure: If you’re in Norway during the darker months, getting as much daylight as possible may help regulate your energy levels.

Wish you the best of luck <3
